Not Sure What You Mean…

August 2020 – Back in 2019, I had created this meme during the Easter/Passover holiday. Even though our regional competition season wasn’t finished yet, we had the holiday weekend off to celebrate with our families. And though we had other plans, it was still a bit unusual to have no need to factor the dance schedule into our days.
Fast forward to this week…having competed at Starpower’s Battle Under the Big Top in Atlantic City this past Sunday, our competition season is over (for now; we still have two pending in the next month and a half, but with COVID restrictions still in place here in New Jersey, I just don’t see them happening). Regular dance classes start next week.
All of this leaves us with NO DANCE WHATSOEVER this week! It was less than three dance-free days when Jocelyn wandered into my office, a lost-puppy-dog look on her face, and mumbled, “I miss dance.” I reminded her that this would be an excellent opportunity to catch up on the summer math and reading work she’s been neglecting (shockingly, she did not seem too enthusiastic about the opportunity). She dropped her head a little lower and shuffled out of the room.
Dance dominates our lives, so it’s no wonder that my girls don’t really know what to do with themselves during this break. I reminded them that some downtime is good; if nothing else, it helps you to appreciate the activity you’re missing. Of course, they had more than their fair share of downtime during the COVID closures, so they weren’t as exhausted as they typically are during this time of year.
So, as much as we would typically relish the time away from dance, we don’t really want the break this year.
