After 12 years of hauling costumes, dance shoes, makeup, garment steamers, and just about everything else a competition weekend requires, I’ve learned one thing: a great dance bag isn’t a luxury—it’s a sanity saver.

Between my two girls, we’ve tried out a wide variety of dance bags over the years. One was far too small to meet our needs. One was so bulky that it was difficult to maneuver through parking lots, hallways, and crowded dressing rooms. And one even showed significant wear and tear before the end of the first performance day! So I concluded that we needed a deep bag with lots of storage space that was easy for me to lift, but also provided great maneuverability. Oh, and we definitely need one with a hanging rack.

That’s why I was excited to check out the Rac N’ Roll Halo Dance Bag

Here’s my honest review.

First Impressions

On opening the box, I just knew that Jocelyn especially was going to love the bubble gum pink, glittery exterior. Some rolling dance bags are enormous, awkward, and bulky. I loved that the Halo has a much cleaner profile while still offering plenty of storage. And the vinyl exterior felt durable, like it would stand up to significant wear and tear.

Storage & Organization

This is where the Halo really shines, in my opinion. We have so much to carry on a competition day, so I really look for ample storage. What stood out to me was that the bag was deeper than the other bags I’ve worked with. It offers a larger capacity without elongating its “footprint.”

The Halo has two zippered external pockets; one is insulated, making it perfect for keeping bottled drinks cool. Dance moms can use a triangular pocket on the back side of the bag with a buckled strap going across it midway, if they need extra storage.

On the inside, the top flap has a zippered mesh pocket in addition to the long mesh pocket on one side of the bag, and the divided mesh pocket on the other side. The entire bag has a nylon-like lining to protect your stuff from the mechanical parts. You can secure all of the contents with two buckled straps, and/or use the 6 D-rings mounted on one side to put the tops of hangers through.

When we used it for the next competition, I was not disappointed. We fit all fourteen costumes in the Halo (I used garment bags, so those take up some room as well). Plus, I was able to put the makeup bag, hair supplies, folding organizer shelf, long makeup mirror, collapsible hamper, first aid supplies, garment steamer, stool, and water bottles inside the bag and its outer pockets. We did not have room for the small train case we use for other supplies, so we carried that separately.

I used the triangular pocket on the outside to carry our folding stool. We used the strap to secure it, but I do wish the pocket itself was deeper so it would have kept more of the stool itself contained.

The Bar

On our old bag, the bar was preassembled; all you had to do was lift the telescoping side bars up. For the Halo bag, the top bar is detached (it was laying inside the bag when I opened it). Setting it up was so easy; I just raised the side bars and popped the top bar on. While technically this is an extra step more than I had to do with our last bag, it really took no time at all. I wanted to see how high the top bar was from the bottom of the bag so I measured it. It wound up being 52 inches, which works well for our longer costumes.

All fourteen costumes fit on the bar, as shown in the video. But on competition days when we don’t have to use all of our costumes, I hang a mesh shelf organizer for accessories with the extra space. The hanging mirror goes on one end of the bar so the girls can touch up their makeup and hair, and I wrap a stroller fan right above the mirror as well.

Easy to Roll

The first time I rolled the Halo bag, I was struck by how easy it was to maneuver. We had been using a two-wheeled bag; when it was loaded heavily (which was all the time), it was extremely difficult to wheel around corners, through tight hallways, and up curbs and steps. I have a much easier time rolling this one around; the wheels glide smoothly, and I don’t have to tug it awkwardly behind me. Having four 360-degree wheels is an absolute game-changer, and I don’t think I could ever go back to the two-wheeled variety.

The telescoping handle is easy to operate, and the two handle straps use Velcro to stay together while you’re rolling along.

Durability

We’ve learned, through over a decade of experience, that dance bags take a beating. They get tossed into car trunks, rolled across parking lots, tugged onto hotel elevators, and maneuvered through tight dressing rooms. I’ve found that this is the quality that separates the premium bags from the off-brand options; the cheaper knockoffs tend to fall short over time, making it necessary to buy them more frequently.

Throughout our competition season, the Halo has maintained its “solid” feel. I never had a moment that I felt like it might not hold up to the punishing we were putting it through. The zippers operate smoothly, and it felt like the contents were always secure inside the bag.

The one thing that I noticed was that some of the stitching on the outer pocket started coming undone by the third time we had used it. But it is entirely possible that I unknowingly snagged it on something and just kept plowing forward with it. I plan to take a closer look to see what I can do about it when we return home from traveling.

Is It Big Enough?

For most competitions, it absolutely is. But as I mention in one of the videos, I do wish that I had gotten the large size to accommodate both dancers. If we just had one dancer in the family, I would say that the medium is perfect for even recital days (when we have the most costumes). And actually, I wonder if little ol’ me would even be able to lift a large one when it is fully packed. I have comically weak arms, so maybe not.

For nationals, we brought this plus one solo bag and still had enough room.

Final Verdict

After over a decade in the competitive dance world, I’ve learned that the products worth investing in are the ones that make competition weekends easier.

The Rac N’ Roll Halo Dance Bag does exactly that. Having a place for everything makes a noticeable difference when you’re juggling multiple dances, tight schedules, and long days. So I would consider this premium bag to be an investment, helping you to keep some sanity on chaotic dance day.

If you’re shopping for a rolling dance bag that combines organization, durability, and style, the Rac N’ Roll Halo should absolutely be on your short list.

This is the bag that I wish we had back when my girls first started dancing.
